Forest Heights, on Kitchener's west side between Fischer-Hallman and the Highland Road corridor, was built through the 1960s, 70s and 80s, and its landscapes are now forty to sixty years old. That is the best kind of lot to work with and the one that most needs it. The trees planted when the houses were new are now mature maples, spruces and locusts that shade half the yard. The foundation planting that suited a new house has become junipers dead underneath, yews cut into cubes, cedars over the eaves and a burning bush the size of a shed. Lawns that were full sun in 1975 are now thin and mossy under the canopy. Beds edged in landscape ties have rotted, and the odd low timber wall along a driveway is leaning. Renovating a Forest Heights yard is not starting over. It is keeping the trees, which are worth more than anything that can be planted and may need a City of Kitchener permit to remove anyway, taking out the shrubs that are past saving, rebuilding the beds with soil that has forty years of roots in it, and planting for the shade that now exists: sedges, ferns, hostas, native woodland perennials and shrubs that flower without full sun. The lawn gets renovated where there is light and replaced with beds and groundcover where there is not, rather than reseeded for the fourth time. Rotted ties come out and a proper small block or stone wall goes in with base and drainage. Fall cleanups here are a real job because of the leaves.
