Huron Park is one of the newest parts of Kitchener, spreading along Huron Road and Fischer-Hallman toward the Huron Natural Area, and nearly every lot in it has the same landscape: builder sod, two spirea and a cedar by the front step, and a back yard of graded clay with a swale along the fence. It is the definition of a first-landscape neighbourhood. By the second or third summer the sod is dead in patches, the low corner of the yard is a pond after every storm, and the owners are ready to do it properly. Doing it properly means starting under the grass: checking how deep the topsoil actually is, breaking up and amending the compacted clay, correcting the grade so water runs to the swale and the street rather than against the foundation, and only then laying sod or seeding with a drought-tolerant blend that will survive a Kitchener August under the Region's outdoor water rules. The finished grade has to respect the lot-grading plan filed with the City of Kitchener, and a landscape that fills the swale or raises a bed against the house creates exactly the wet basement the plan was meant to prevent. After the lawn, it is beds: cut properly, built with real soil, planted with shrubs and perennials chosen to still fit the house in ten years. Small walls where a yard was terraced by the builder, a fenced bed line the dog cannot dig under, a raised vegetable bed where the sun is. Everything is quoted in writing after a site walk, with utility locates done before any digging.
